Pictured
Rocks National Lakeshore - The
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore extends from Munising, Michigan
to Grand Marais, Michigan along the southern shoreline of Lake
Superior. The Department of Interior has erected viewing platforms
and made the castle much more easily accessed by all.
If
you were fortunate, you saw the castle when there were two promenant
formations rising into the sky; today, there is only one. In April
2006, one of the castles fell off of Miner's Castle into the chilly
Lake Superior waters below.
Big
Spring - Located
in Palms Book State Park, a 15-minute drive from US2 at Thompson,
on state highway M-149, The Big Spring - or Kitch-iti-kipi as
it was originally named, is Michigan's largest natural freshwater
spring. The Big Spring is just one of many natural attractions
in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It measures over 200 feet
across, is over 40 feet deep, and pumps out over 10, 000 gallons
of water a minute. A chilling 45 degree Fahrenheit all year long,
it can be easily crossed with a self-operated observation raft.
The
gushing water keep clouds of sand in constant motion to create
shapes and forms for the imaginations of all, and to add to the
mystery of his legend.
Kitch-iti-kipi - A Legend
A smitten young chieftain named Kitch-iti-kipi vying
for the heart of a young maiden vowed his eternal love to her
as other young maidens danced near his wigwam. To test his words,
she challenged him to prove his love by taking them to the deep
dark pool of water in the conifer swamp and catching her as she
leaped from an overhanging branch. The legend has claimed that
the spring was named in honor of this young chieftain who died
in the icy waters while attempting to satisfy his maiden's wish.
After the death of Kitch-iti-kipi, it was said that
the love of a person could be made forever true by placing honey
on a piece of birch bark, dipping it into the spring, and presenting
it to your desired soulmate.
Chippewa parents who were expecting a child would
visit the spring in search of their child's rightful name, which
they learned from the sounds of the gushing waters.
Many tribes would visit the spring like people visit
the springs in Karlsbad to be healed.
The spring has been known by many names including
the Drum Water, but if you visit with the birds are at rest, the
quiet sound is nearly eerie.
